Babes is the original “let’s put on a show!” show. Featuring some of Rogers and Hart’s greatest hits—Johnny One Note, Where or When, I Wish I Were in Love Again, The Lady is a Tramp, and My Funny Valentine, among others—Babes in Arms concerns a group of young people orphaned for the summer by their vaudevillian parents who have gone on the road to salvage their careers. Faced with being sent to a work home by the local sheriff, the kids decide that putting on a musical will solve all their financial and personal problems. And that’s where the fun begins. Romance, class struggle, racial and gender equality—it has it all—plus lots and lots of laughs.
