Ovid's METAMORPHOSES is brought to light by playwright Mary Zimmerman in an adaptation that juxtaposes the ancient and the contemporary, the comic with the sorrowful. Much of the play's power resides in Zimmerman's story telling. She deftly combines beautiful language with arresting visual image. The entire play is set by a large swimming pool as a selection of Ovid's tales are told. Primary themes are love and loss and caution and recklessness, the gods and the humans. The play is suitable for middle school audiences and up.
